Norwich Professor Examines Botswana’s Nation-Building Success

History Professor Rowly Brucken will present his findings on nation-building at the 13th International Conference on African and Latin American Studies in Lisbon, Portugal on April 16-17.

His paper, entitled “Botswana and Nation-Building Theory,” discusses which of the major theories of nation-building explains the post-independence evolution of Botswana into a multi-party democracy with a stable, prosperous capitalist economy.

The key finding of the work is that the establishment of democratic and transparent governance before the discovery of diamonds and other mineral wealth laid the basis for responsible, sustainable, and participatory economic development.

Professor Brucken’s research has been supported by a Charles A. Dana Research Fellowship and a Chase International Travel Grant. His paper will be published in the peer-reviewed conference proceedings.

Middle and high school Vermont science students converged on Norwich University on Saturday to compete in the 2015 Vermont State Science and Math Fair, now in its 56th year. Judges represented over 50 STEM partners from academia, industry and professional organizations.

The event is co-directed by Norwich University professor emeritus of biology Carlos Pinkham. “We are so passionate about fostering a love of the STEM fields from as early an age as possible,” he said. “Norwich University is the perfect setting for it.”

The all-volunteer organization awarded more than $9,000 in cash prizes and $300,000 in college scholarships on Saturday and provided nearly $15,500 to Vermont students and teachers to cover travel expenses to competitions outside the state this year.

In the biggest award of the day, three finalists were chosen to attend the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh May 10-15 to compete for $4 million in prizes and scholarships. The Vermont winners were Nathan Kakalec and Sajani Sivakumar, both from South Burlington High School and the team of Ben Beagher and Vincent Moeykens from Windsor High School. Kakalec’s project used computer modeling to predict the outbreak of emerald ash borer in New Hampshire. Sivakumar’s project studied the effects of vitamin D on pancreatic cells under diabetic stress. Meagher and Moeykens studied whether a home computer server could compete with cloud-based services in terms of speed, cost and ease of use.

All three finalists were awarded Next Generation Scholarships to Norwich University.

Norwich University Partners with UK Developer of New Cyber Intelligence Tool

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University, the oldest private military college in the U.S. and ranked second best in the country for cyber security courses and degree programs, has partnered with Silobreaker to use their online threat intelligence product in their cyber forensics classes.

Silobreaker’s cyber security product collects vast volumes of open source data from news, blogs, feeds and social media and provides the tools and visualizations for analyzing and making sense of such data. Students are able to cut through the data noise and extract meaningful and timely insights related to cyber events and the motivations behind them.

Currently used by more than 80 Norwich students, Norwich University offers the product across all their cyber security classes including Cyber Criminalistics, Cyber Investigation and Network Forensics. Students are taught how to apply Silobreaker to intelligence gathering in the context of their investigations and are required to use the technology throughout their independent research projects.

“In order to maintain our excellence in cyber security research and training, we need to stay on top of the latest emerging technologies,” said Aron Temkin, dean of the College of Professional Schools. “Silobreaker is a powerful tool that is both user-friendly and flexible enough to fit within our cyber education programs.”

“Students can get useful output quickly, and we do not have to turn a semester forensics class into a ‘How To Use Silobreaker’ session,” said Dr. Peter Stephenson, CCFP, CISSP, director of the University’s Center for Advanced Computing and Digital Forensics. “Cyber events do not occur in a vacuum. There is context around them that often is hard to see. Silobreaker solves that. It cuts through the mass of information available on the Internet and helps our students get to the meat of an issue quickly and with a variety of ways of accessing and displaying it. This is a new way to look at cyber forensics.”

Norwich Partners with US Army Reserves for Cyberdefense Training

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University has officially partnered with the United States Army Reserves (USAR) to develop cyber-education curricula that align with federal standards and cybersecurity needs.

Norwich University has been selected as one of six universities in the nation to lead a USAR public/private partnership effort, called Cyber P3, in an effort to foster the intellectual development of future leaders.

Norwich University will specifically focus on its successes as a nationally recognized cyber education Center of Excellence. The goal of the partnership will be to collaborate, develop and integrate cyber-education programs to meet the needs of the USAR into existing undergraduate and graduate courses in cyber security and information assurance.

Training Cyberwarriors

“With this partnership and cooperation, our students will learn the specific competencies needed to build and defend both privately operated networks and those under the purview of the USAR,” said Phil Susmann, director of Norwich University Applied Research Institutes and vice president of strategic partnerships.

“Our cyber course offerings will map to the National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities pathways to achieve depth and breadth of cyber security education that aligns with the USAR’s need for these capabilities.”

“Our efforts will enhance the development of the skill sets necessary to defend and secure the nation’s critical cyber-based systems.”

In a partnership formalized on Tuesday, Feb. 10 on Capitol Hill, Norwich University joins the University of Washington, George Mason University, the University of Texas at San Antonio, Drexel University and the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs as six centers of cybersecurity training for the U.S. Army Reserve.

Strong Demand

“The demand for these individuals and units far outpaces the current cyber soldier and unit inventory,” said Lt Gen Jeffery Talley, Chief of the United States Army Reserve. “The GAO estimates that there is currently a need for 40,000 cybersecurity professionals just to satisfy the government’s demand. The current DoD and Army school systems do not provide the through-put or advanced skills required for the USAR, so this will be a means of resolving this issue and filling the demand.

“Each of these schools was chosen for their excellence in cybersecurity research, teaching and their experience in helping the public and private sectors address cybersecurity issues.”

“This partnership places Vermont and Norwich University squarely at the intersection of the public and private natures of our nation’s critical systems, most of which depend on cyber systems,” said Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.). “America’s online connectivity that allows the free exchange of ideas, commerce, learning, and other interactions is one of our greatest strengths and assets. Vermont is known for its citizen soldiers, and Norwich University is known for providing the education necessary for success both as community leaders and in service to nation, so who better to defend the nation’s cyber systems?”

Each school in the Cyber P3i will work with local reserve units to take reservists through a rigorous cybersecurity curriculum. This program will give the reservists the training necessary to receive foundational cyber skills and potential equivalency for cyber Military Occupational Specialty Qualification, which would enable them to become specialists in the Army. They will also have the opportunity to enroll at the schools with scholarships provided through the program and the G.I. Bill.

Long-range goals for the program will look at building cybersecurity research and training laboratories in each of the partner institutions and formalizing job-placement procedures for graduates of the program.

Norwich to Design Sustainable “Tiny Houses” for Vermonters

Norwich University’s College of Professional Schools has received a $20,000 grant from the TD Bank Charitable Foundation to design affordable, green micro-houses for low-income residents

NORTHFIELD, Vt.–Norwich University has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, to fund the development of affordable solar houses by students and faculty in the School of Architecture + Art and the David Crawford School of Engineering.

The grant will support the Creating Affordable Sustainable Architecture (CASA) Initiative, a new program within the College of Professional Schools that will focus on research and development of affordable alternative-energy housing for low-income families in Vermont.

“In the true Norwich traditions of experiential learning and service to others, we are offering students credit to research, develop and produce a micro-solar house that offers a solution to the housing crisis in Vermont, and this generous gift from the TD Charitable Foundation is helping to make that possible,” said Aron Temkin, an architect, professor and dean of the College of Professional Schools at Norwich University.

The effort builds on lessons Norwich University architecture students and faculty learned over the course of their 2013 competition in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon. Norwich’s Delta T-90 house won for affordability.

The immediate and long-term objective of Norwich’s new CASA affordable micro-house program is to develop a regionally derived, solar-powered, affordable housing model. Norwich architects and engineers ultimately aim to develop a modular system of “micro houses,” units that can stand alone or be combined to create larger, cohesive structures depending on the needs of the occupant.

“Over half of all Vermonters cannot afford a house that meets the target construction costs of the 2013 Decathlon’s Affordability Contest, regardless of energy costs,” said Cara Armstrong, director of Norwich University’s School of Architecture + Art.

“Consequently, we have committed to continuing our work with students and faculty across disciplines to design and build adaptable and sustainable housing to be affordable by a family living at 80% of Vermont’s median income level and below.”

Through seminars and a design/build studio, a team of Engineering and Architecture + Art students and faculty will design and build one “Micro House” of approximately 200 square feet, including a bathroom and kitchen, by the end of the next academic year.

NASA Astronaut to Speak During Norwich’s Spring Todd Lecture Series

Space Shuttle and International Space Station veteran Michael E. Fossum will speak about his 193 days in space and NASA research

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University continues its spring Todd Lecture Series with a lecture titled, “Report from the International Space Station,’’ a presentation by a decorated NASA Astronaut Michael E. Fossum on Thursday February 26, 2015 at 7 p.m. in Dole Auditorium, Webb Hall.

A veteran of three space flights, Fossum has logged seven space walks and over 193 days in space aboard the Space Shuttle and International Space Station.

Fossum will discuss his work aboard the orbiting national laboratory during his lecture, which is sponsored by Norwich University’s College of Science and Mathematics. A Q&A will follow the presentation.

Fossum received his commission in the U.S. Air Force at Texas A&M University in 1980. He completed graduate work at the Air Force Institute of Technology the following year before the Air Force assigned him to support NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. In 1985, he graduated from test pilot school at Edwards Air Force Base, California, and served as a Flight Test Engineer in the F-16 Test Squadron. Fossum resigned from active duty in 1992 to work for NASA and retired as a Colonel from the USAF Reserves in 2010. He has logged more than 1,800 hours in 35 different aircraft.

In 1993, he joined NASA as a systems engineer with primary responsibilities to evaluate the Russian Soyuz spacecraft for use as a space station emergency escape vehicle. Later in 1993, Fossum was selected to represent NASA’s Flight Crew Operations Directorate in an extensive redesign of the International Space Station (ISS).

He was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate in 1998. After eight years of intensive training, he made his first space flight, traveling aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery on a 13-day mission in July 2006 to supply the International Space Station. During that mission, Fossum made three space walks, called extravehicular activities (EVAs).

Fossum flew aboard Discovery again in 2008 with the STS-124 crew that delivered Japan’s Kibo lab module to the ISS. He returned to space in 2011 as part of Expedition 28 and served as commander of the ISS. His final EVA during this mission was the seventh in his career for a total of 48 hours, 32 minutes of EVA time, placing him seventh on the all-time list for cumulative EVA time.

Murder Scholar Prof. Elizabeth Gurian Receives Board of Fellows Prize

January 5, 2015–The Faculty Development Committee recently announced the recipient of the 2015-16 Board of Fellows Faculty Development Prize, Dr. Elizabeth Gurian, for her project, “Female Homicide Offenders: An Exploration of Personal Narratives.”

Dr. Gurian, an assistant professor in the School of Justice Studies and Sociology, completed her doctoral work at the Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge (UK) and was a consultant to the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime in Vienna.

She joined the faculty of Norwich University in 2011, and since her arrival has maintained an active research and publication agenda in her area of expertise, female and partnered homicide offenders and serial murderers.

She is the recipient of several other Faculty Development Program awards, including a Charles A. Dana Research Fellowship and a Charles A. Dana Category I Grant.

In 2013 Dr. Gurian won statewide recognition when Vermont Women in Higher Education selected her as the recipient of the Peggy R. Williams Emerging Professional Award.

Prof. Narain Batra Visits Bhutan to Research Tech Transformation

December 26, 2014–Dr. Narain Batra, professor of communications and diplomacy at Norwich University, recently completed a two-week research trip to Bhutan, where he laid the groundwork for his new book on how communications technology is transforming a country that has constitutionally mandated protection of the environment.

During his stay in Bhutan, he interviewed more than a dozen sources, including the Vice Chancellor (President) and Academic Manager (Vice President) of Royal University of Bhutan; an editor of Kuensel, a daily newspaper; and a group of doctors at the National Referral Hospital. He also spoke to telecommunications experts, students, and Buddhist monks at various monasteries.

Bhutan, a Switzerland-sized country of 740,000 inhabitants nestled in the eastern Himalayan Mountains, is known for its emphasis on “Gross National Happiness,” instead of Gross Domestic Product and is the only country in the world where environment protection is constitutionally mandated.

Bhutan is a member of South Asian Association For Regional Cooperation (SAARC), a group of countries that are practicing democracies aiming to form an economic union despite all of their political problems, civil wars, internal insurgencies, and struggles with terrorism.

Grants to Fund Pervious Concrete, Green Stormwater Solutions Research

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – A way to turn stormwater runoff into drinking water will be investigated in one of two recently awarded research grants to the David Crawford School of Engineering at Norwich University.

Both grant projects are overseen by Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering Tara Kulkarni.

Kulkarni earned a pilot grant that funds her collaboration with a student research project led by senior civil engineering student Susan Limberg. Kulkarni, as the faculty adviser, wrote a proposal based on Limberg’s idea of developing pervious concrete filters to control stormwater runoff. One compelling component to their project is a filtration process aimed at transforming rainwater into drinkable water.

They received a Phase I, $14,957 grant from the P3: People, Prosperity and the Planet Student Design Competition for Sustainability, a national-level competition offered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Limberg serves as a cadet first lieutenant, executive officer of Drill Company in the Norwich University Corps of Cadets and as president of the NU Society of Women Engineers. Working with Prof. Kulkarni as her advisor, Limberg will study the filtration component of the stormwater runoff project as part of her senior honors thesis. Norwich faculty who study economics and sociology are also supporting her research.

Meanwhile, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering Kulkarni has received a $9,917 pilot project grant of her own via the University of Vermont’s National Science Foundation EPSCoR program.

The Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) is designed to fulfill the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) mandate to promote scientific progress nationwide.

Last month Kulkarni began work on her project, which aims to design a suitable model for Green Infrastructure/Low Impact Development (GI/LID) projects to manage stormwater in Vermont watersheds.

Her research is investigating stormwater issues across the Winooski River watershed with a special focus on Montpelier.

The research will involve undergraduate students at Norwich and engage two undergraduate classrooms in stormwater quality assessment and modeling related activities. In addition, K-12 students in four Vermont schools in Montpelier, Burlington, St. Johnsbury, and Williamstown as well as local area Girl Scouts groups will participate in water resource management and green infrastructure related activities as part of a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) educational outreach effort.
