Norwich University computer security program part of major security event, Super Bowl 50

The Norwich University computer security and information assurance (CSIA) program, with students operating both onsite in California and on campus, supported Santa Clara Police Department, the lead law enforcement agency at Super Bowl 50, and the law enforcement and homeland security functions leading up to and during this international sporting event.

Norwich University was the only educational institution invited to participate in support of the public safety team tasked with safeguarding Super Bowl 50. With support from over 60 students working at its campus based Global Threat Observatory, Norwich cybersecurity students and faculty collaborated with Levi’s Stadium – the host for the event – and with the Super Bowl 50 Critical Infrastructure & Cyber Protection Sub Committee, the represented agencies and their personnel. This committee was led by Detective Sergeant Ray Carreira ’96 of the Santa Clara Police Department, the lead law enforcement agency for the event.

Throughout 2015 CSIA students worked with this team in preparation for this globally televised event and formed partnerships with leading software developers to support their work.

Norwich University’s Cyber Gaming Software Utilized in Quantum Dawn 3 Cybersecurity Exercise

Norwich University Applied Research Institutes (NUARI) tested its cyber gaming software yesterday with over 500 participants from over 80 financial institutions and government organizations in one of the largest financial sector cybersecurity exercises, called Quantum Dawn 3. Quantum Dawn 3 was organized by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA). [See SIFMA’s statement here.] SIFMA engaged NUARI to provide a real-world simulation of a large-scale cyber-attack.

Yesterday’s exercise allowed some of the country’s largest financial institutions and some of its smallest to test their ability to maintain operations while managing a coordinated cyber-attack designed to interrupt the U.S. financial system.

NUARI built the tool, called Distributed Environment for Decision-Making Exercises – Financial Sector (DECIDE – FS®), under a $9.9 million contract awarded in August 2013 by the Cyber Security Division of the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate.

U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), a member of the Senate’s Appropriations Committee and of its Defense Subcommittee, sponsored legislation that chartered NUARI in 2002 and announced the DECIDE – FS® contract at Norwich’s Northfield campus in 2013.

“Cyber-attacks on our personal and financial and security systems are increasingly pervasive and damaging. Norwich University has done important and outstanding work in training future leaders and in helping to defend our nation’s critical infrastructure from cyber-attacks,” said Leahy. “I am proud that this respected Vermont institution contributes to our readiness to deal with this pressing national security challenge.”

The only tool of its kind, DECIDE – FS® was initially designed to test U.S. financial sector cybersecurity and can be adapted for use in other critical infrastructure arenas, such as utilities and communications.

“Experience is the best teacher. These Quantum Dawn exercises provide realistic training with measurable results and encourage information sharing, cooperation and coordination to work through the disruption. Operational incidents, caused by cyber-attacks should be planned for and building resiliency within critical infrastructures is paramount, not optional,” said NUARI President Phil Susmann.

DECIDE-FS® replaces simple tabletop exercises with a business simulation customized to individual business models, information technology topology, and organizational dependencies. Built on top of a financial markets simulation, business leaders are stressed with cyber threats that affect the markets – price, volume, latency, and utilities as well as how each organization is structured in terms of business model, value chains, and dependencies.

The daylong exercise on Sept. 16 followed two prior successful cybersecurity exercises in 2013 and 2011. All three Quantum Dawn exercises were facilitated by NUARI. While the prior two exercises pushed participants and the markets to extremes to determine when markets would close, the focus of Quantum Dawn 3 was to maintain operations in the face of a significant data integrity failure within post-trade operations.

Through the simulation, individuals and organizations learn to operate under conditions that simulate reality—similar to how simulators are employed to assist in the training of pilots and mariners to be prepared for and handle emergencies.

NUARI has collaborated with the Department of Homeland Security for nearly a decade, preparing individuals and institutions to respond to catastrophic network failures, natural disasters, distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks and other events that can impact market activity, communications, and essential services affecting critical infrastructures. DECIDE-FS® created at NUARI, is a massive, multi-participant simulation that effectively immerses industry decision makers, securities traders, IT and business continuity managers and others into complex, simulated scenarios focused on the effects of cyber incidents as well as other hazards.

Norwich In the News: “Camp Teaches Teens to Solve Cyber Crimes”

Vermont Public Radio’s story on the Norwich GenCyber@NU digital forensics summer camp for high school juniors and seniors was rebroadcast by the national news program Here & Now. A co-production of NPR and WBUR in Boston, Here & Now is carried on 383 radio stations across the country and is heard by an estimated 3.6 million listeners each week. The midday news program aired the GenCyber@NU segment on July 13, 2015.

VPR radio reporter Charlotte Albright first profiled the GenCyber@NU program on June 25, 2015. The free, weeklong camp allowed 20 rising high school juniors and seniors to explore the fields of cybersecurity and digital forensics with Norwich faculty and cybersecurity majors. Participants built their own computers and solved a fictional crime by real-life gangsters Bonnie and Clyde. Albright interviewed camp co-directors Prof. Peter Stephenson and recent Norwich computer security and information assurance graduate Katya Lopez ’15.

Norwich University welcomes high school students to GenCyber cybersecurity camp

Today, Norwich University kicks-off a week-long pre-college cybersecurity program for 20 high school students called GenCyber@NU. Funded by the National Security Agency and the National Science Foundation, participants will learn, explore, experiment and apply basic concepts of programming, forensics and cryptography, through a series of gaming, modeling, and simulation activities with peers and faculty mentors in a university setting.

The week-long overnight camp is offered at no cost to the students and includes building a computer for each student to take home. All classes are taught by faculty and alumni of Norwich University’s nationally recognized cybersecurity program.

GenCyber summer camps will be held on 29 university and college campuses in 18 states this year – exposing largely middle and high school students and teachers to subject matter and cyber problem solving that will help prepare them for college coursework. The camps, some of which are overnight, are free for participants.

This is the second year of the program. The goal is to expand GenCyber from the current 43 camps to 200 by 2020.

Norwich University presents chief information officer for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in June Todd Lecture

Norwich University continues its 2015 Todd Lecture Series with “Leadership in the Digital Age” a presentation by Lieutenant General Mark S. Bowman, Director Command, Control, Communications and Computers (C4) / Cyber and the Chief Information Officer for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, on Thursday June 18, 2015 at 10 a.m. in Plumley Armory.

At the Pentagon, Bowman develops C4 capabilities; conducts analysis and assessments; and evaluates C4 requirements, plans, programs and strategies.

Previously, he served as the Director of Architecture, Operations, Networks and Space, for the Office of the Army Chief Information Officer. Bowman played a central role in establishing strategy, policy, and guidance to integrate, build and facilitate the U.S. Army’s LandWarNet network.

Bowman was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army on May 28, 1978. He has served in several joint and operational assignments and has commanded at every level from company to Signal Brigade. He has a bachelor’s degree in history from Norwich University, Vt. and a master’s degree in public administration from Shippensburg University, Pa.

Bowman’s lecture serves as the keynote presentation for this year’s annual residency conference of nearly 600 students representing nine online graduate programs and two bachelor’s degree completion programs at Norwich’s College of Graduate and Continuing Studies. Gathering from across the country and the globe under the theme of “Learning to Lead, Leading to Serve,” these Norwich students will gather for a week of capstone/culminating academic work and conferences

Norwich University’s Todd Lecture Series is named in honor of Army Maj. Gen. Russell Todd (USA Ret.) and his wife, Carol, in gratitude for their dedicated service to the university. Todd ’50, serves as Norwich President Emeritus. With this series, Norwich brings the nation’s foremost thought leaders drawn from business, politics, the arts, science, the military and other arenas to its Northfield campus. All events are free and open to the public.

Wilson Ring of the Associated Press wrote about Norwich University’s free, week-long GenCyber summer cybersecurity camp for high school juniors and seniors in a May 2, 2015 article, “Summer Camps With a Mission: To Create Cybersecurity Experts”:

    “At Vermont’s Norwich University, 20 high school students will build computers they’ll be able to take home … And none of the children or their parents will have to pay a cent.”

Picked up by national and international media outlets, the wire service feature takes a broad look at a variety of National Security Agency and National Science Foundation-sponsored cybersecurity camps for tweens and teens being held across the country this summer. The article explains that the free day or overnight summer programs are part of a larger effort by the federal government to nurture an interest in cybersecurity among young people to better meet the country’s growing—and largely, unmet—need for a well-trained cybersecurity workforce.

Among other sources, Ring interviewed Norwich University professor and cyber expert Peter Stephenson, PhD, who teaches classes in network attack and defense, digital forensics, and cyber investigation:

    “The 20 high school students who will attend the Norwich University camp in Northfield, which is national recognized for its cybersecurity programs, will build their own computers, learn about attacking and defending networks, and hear from speakers, said Peter Stephenson, the director of the school’s Center for Advanced Computing and Digital Forensics.
    ‘Obviously, the government is hoping, especially the NSA, is hoping that they’ll be able to take advantage of some of these students as they progress, but there’s no requirement here that these students move on to government,’ Stephenson said.”

Norwich University Applied Research Institutes Names New Board Member

Bank president and CEO Thomas S. Leavitt will join the 11-member board, bringing particular expertise to NUARI’s financial-sector cyberthreat security work

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University Applied Research Institutes (NUARI) named Northfield Savings Bank President and CEO Thomas S. Leavitt, of Waterbury Center, to the NUARI board of directors.

Leavitt joins 10 directors on the board, bringing 22 years of banking experience, including oversight of all functions and a history of community and board involvement.

A Burlington, Vt., native, Leavitt holds a BS in Business Administration from the University of New Hampshire’s Whittemore School of Business & Economics and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Leavitt will bring significant insight to NUARI’s focus on supporting the U.S. financial sector with unique cybersecurity tools.

“NUARI is at the vanguard of cybersecurity research and information assurance education. Norwich University Launches New Online Bachelor’s Degree Completion Program in Cyber Security

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University’s College of Graduate and Continuing Studies has launched its third online degree completion program, the Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security. The program is set to begin its first trimester in the fall.

“Norwich is a leader in information assurance and security education and has a nearly 200 year legacy of training leaders in the government, military, and private-sector,” said William Clements, dean of the College of Graduate and Continuing Studies.

“Adding the online cyber security bachelor’s degree program expands on this tradition and mission of providing innovative learning opportunities for working adults to effect change in their lives as well as to protect our nation and economy.”

Norwich University’s online cyber security coursework hones students’ skill set to help prepare them to assess, construct, and mitigate vulnerabilities in organizational systems. The new online program is designed for working adults in or looking to transition into the information technology field who want to develop specialized skills in the high-need area of network security.

Similar to other Norwich bachelor’s degree completion programs, the cyber security program can be completed in less than two years. The College of Graduate and Continuing Studies assesses each student’s prior learning and training to determine how it may be applied towards his or her degree. The goal is to help students get the most out of their Norwich education, while accelerating their bachelor’s degree completion when possible.

The new online cyber security bachelor’s degree includes two minors: information warfare and security management, and computer forensics and vulnerability management. The program also offers cutting-edge courses to correlate to the growing field of information assurance and security. Students in the program also benefit from distinguished faculty, who bring a mix of academic and professional experience in the cybersecurity, information security, information assurance, computer science, and information technology management fields.

In conjunction with the program launch, the College of Graduate and Continuing Studies named Henry Collier program manager for the cyber security degree completion program. Collier served six years on active duty in the Army. He currently has 18 years in the Army Reserves, where he has risen to the rank of chief warrant officer 2 as an information systems technician. In the academic arena, he’s developed and taught courses in systems administration, information assurance, network security, healthcare information technology and digital forensics.

“As a respected Army Reserve officer and experienced educator of information assurance, the knowledge Henry brings will help ensure the program’s relevance and real-world application as the need for cyber-educated military and public sector professionals continues to increase,” Clements said.

NSF Awards Norwich Grant for Free Teen Summer Cyber Camp

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University has received a grant for $55,675 from the National Science Foundation, with support from the National Security Agency, to lead a weeklong summer camp on cybersecurity for rising high school juniors and seniors. Dubbed GenCyber@NU, the comprehensive program is free to all participants and will be taught by standout Norwich faculty and alumni.

Students will dive into the fields of cyber security and cyber defense while building their own computers, which are theirs to take home at the end of the week. The pre-college program will be held June 21-27 and is designed for students interested in information security, digital forensics, cyberattack defense, and personal online protection.

All expenses for the week-long program, including tuition, room and board, field trips, program fees, and round-trip airfare and transportation to and from the Norwich University campus (as applicable), are covered at no cost to GenCyber@NU participants.
