Norwich University Presents Prominent Oromo Novelist, Scholar and Filmmaker Teferi Niggusie Tafa

Norwich University’s Peace and War Center presents “The Traditional Citizen Soldier: The Oromo Gadaa System in Ethiopia,” a presentation by prominent Oromo novelist, scholar and filmmaker Teferi Niggusie Tafa on Thursday, Feb. 22, from 4-5 p.m. in the Kreitzberg Library South Instruction Room.

This event is free and open to the public.

Tafa is a visiting scholar at Norwich University. In addition to publishing the first (and so far only) scholarly analysis of Oromo-language novels, he has also published several of his own novels in the Oromo language, including the award-winning “Jaalala Dhuga,” by Macmillan Publishers in London and “Qondalticha,” a satirical film. His research interests ranges from nationalism, literature, and film studies.

Established in 2016, Norwich University’s Peace and War Center advances scholarship and deliberation on warfare and its mitigation, processes, and conditions of peace. The Center’s work emphasizes  research and discussion on the precipitating factors and preconditions of war and peace. In order to understand the cycles of war and peace, it is critical to examine the role of culture and language, analyze the ideological roots of turmoil, and stability, and the evolving role of technology. The Center is designed to be a multi and interdisciplinary mix of international scholars and practitioners.

What Norwich Taught Me

I am driven person in part because I like to be in control….a lot of life is out of my hands and … I need to be at peace with that. Norwich taught me to time-manage and problem-solve efficiently through leadership opportunities like captaining the rugby team.[/content_band]

On Academics:

The research I conducted the summer after my sophomore year was my first scholarly experience. I learned so much about process during this time. I also put together a really polished product, which is one of my accomplishments I am most proud of. I was selected to present this research … analyzing prominent, Western women novelists of the 20th century at the selective Posters on the Hill event [in Washington, D.C.]. I spoke with congressmen and their staff about my research and the importance of undergraduate research, which was an amazing experience.

Also, presenting my senior thesis for International Studies was a very proud moment. I discussed immigration policy and border security in Spain, which was a timely topic considering our own political rhetoric and the refugee crisis.[/content_band]

On Athletics:

The second national championship I won in a Norwich jersey in North Carolina … It was incredible to come from behind in the final and defend out title. We came back from a 12-point [deficit]—winning in the final two minutes. Our team that year was made up of such exceptional players and people and that tournament was so much fun.[/content_band]

Future Plans:

I will be heading to San Antonio to attend induction for the Teach For America San Antonio Corps. For two years I will be teaching in an under-served elementary school in San Antonio. I grew up in a household committed to social justice. My father is a Presbyterian pastor, and I always planned on … nonprofit work. I have been inspired by many great educators throughout my career and have had so much fun learning. I want to be able to help other kids fall in love with learning like I did. Ten to twenty years from now, I want to be a state prosecutor or a family doctor. I plan on taking the next two years to figure out which path to take.[/content_band]

Spring 2016

Norwich faculty David Westerman (geology), Tara Kulkarni (civil engineering), Matthew Lutz (architecture), and Thomas Roberge (physical education) are working with NU students and the Town of Northfield to design and build a community park on reclaimed land along the flood-prone Dog River. Striving to design more than just a pretty public park, the multi-disciplinary town-and-gown team hopes to build a multi-use green space that also educates visitors about the river’s natural flood cycle.

Norwich University Writers Series Presents “Unschooling” Author Ben Hewitt

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University’s Fall 2014 Writers Series kicks off with Vermont author Ben Hewitt on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. in the Kreitzberg Library Multipurpose Room.

Hewitt will read from his latest book, “Home Grown: Adventures in Parenting Off the Beaten Path, Unschooling, and Reconnecting with the Natural World.” The book is a meditation on childhood, learning and nature, and his experience raising two sons on his family’s 40-acre Vermont farm.

The book draws upon Hewitt’s own unconventional educational path. Raised in a two-room cabin on his family’s 160-acre homestead, Hewitt dropped out of high school at the age of 16 to pursue a “self-designed study program in excessively loud heavy metal music and extreme partying.”

In his 20s, he began writing for major national magazines as a full-time freelance journalist. His journalism has appeared in National Geographic Adventure, Outside, Wired, Discover, Yankee, and the New York Times Magazine, among other outlets.

Hewitt’s three previous books, “Making Supper Safe,” “The Town that Food Saved,” and “Saved,” also address our connection with nature through the lenses of healthy, sustainable and locally sourced food and intentional, simple lifestyles.

The October author reading at Norwich continues the university’s Writers Series, now in its third academic year, which is presented by the College of Liberal Arts and the Department of English and Communications.

All events in this series are free and open to the public. Hewitt’s books will be available for sale, and a signing will follow the reading.
